NexCore Group and CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System break ground on Gisela Houseman Medical Campus in Orange, Texas

Principals of NexCore Group and leaders with CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System, along with a number of community members and elected officials, gathered in Orange Jan. 24 to celebrate the groundbreaking and blessing of the 20-acre Gisela Houseman Medical Campus (GHMC).

Also attending the event were representatives involved in the project from The Houseman Companies, the City of Orange and the Orange County Economic Development Corporation.

The ceremony took place on the 5.5-acre site of the first phase of the planned medical campus near U.S. Interstate 10E and Texas State Highway 62. The Phase I project will be a CHRISTUS-anchored, two-story, 55,000-square-foot medical office building (MOB) housing a 24/7 emergency hospital and key outpatient and diagnostic services.

Denver-based NexCore, a national healthcare, life sciences and seniors housing real estate developer, says the development is designed to conveniently meet a wide variety of the community’s healthcare needs following the closure of Baptist Hospital Orange.

“Every design element of the Gisela Houseman Medical Campus has been thoughtfully conceived to provide not only comprehensive quality healthcare services but delivered in such a way to promote and encourage connectivity, patient satisfaction and provider efficiency,” says NexCore’s Senior Vice President, Business Development Nathan Golik.

“The development will become the focal point of healthcare in Orange and the surrounding region, providing convenient and critical access to care for both patients and providers alike, who in the past have had to travel at least 30 minutes to receive and deliver care. The Gisela Houseman Medical Campus is a game-changer for the citizens of Orange.”

Phase I of the project comprises a medical office building, with a majority of the first floor leased to CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System for an emergency hospital and outpatient and diagnostic services. “We want the communities we serve to thrive and to have easy access to the best health care close to home,” explained Paul Trevino, President of CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System. “We couldn’t be more excited about this development and all that we will be able to offer others. Our commitment is to continue to serve our communities with the best health care. The kind that is reliable and personal, holistic and compassionate. We put the patient at the center of everything we do.”

The remaining space will be leased to independent physicians, including Dr. Marty Rutledge of Orange Medical Surgical Associates (a longstanding primary care physician in Orange, and 30-year pioneer in the county that has been the driving force behind the project).

Gisela Houseman, owner of The Houseman Companies, continues “With NexCore and CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System on board, the new medical campus will provide the very best healthcare for our citizens. Having good healthcare availability will also usher in a new era of prosperity for Orange County.”

The City of Orange is looking forward to restoring healthcare to the region, “The Gisela Houseman Medical Campus/CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System Emergency Hospital project is a God given blessing to our community. For several years many representatives from the City and County of Orange have worked to see this day come to fruition and we are thankful,” states Larry Spears Jr., the Mayor of Orange, Texas. “On behalf of Orange City Council and Staff, we are sincerely honored and excited to share the great news with the citizens of the community. I wish to sincerely say “Thank You” to the Rutledge Family, The Houseman Companies, NexCore and the CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System family for working with us to reestablish hope. The Lord is doing marvelous things in the City of Orange and I truly believe that this is only the beginning.”

Planned services and amenities at GHMC include an emergency department/emergency hospital, imaging and diagnostic services, lab, primary care and specialty care clinics, collaboration/community education areas, and facilities support. A grand opening is anticipated in Spring 2023.
